Our Kitchen Staff
Being a small-budget nonprofit in a remote part of northern California, our commercial kitchen operates with only three staff members. Their ongoing dedication is a primary reason our Dining Facility is able to provide a daily nutritious, hot meal in a welcoming atmosphere. Free Meal is truly blessed by their presence each day!

23 Years Employed
“I have been affiliated with St. Vincent de Paul for over 26-years. The first three years, I received services as a Free Meal client. I received blankets when we were cold, toys for my three boys at Christmas, when I thought there would be none. I know how important this lunch program is to so many of our clients! I have spent the last 23-years giving back. How important to hear that “Hello, how are you today”, or “Is there anything I can do for you”? I feel blessed by being able to be on the giving end of what has become a positive place to receive help, a kind word, and a feeling that someone out there cares about them. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with so many good people, who have given so much of their time to better the lives of many that seek out the St. Vincent de Paul Free Dining Facility. To them, I thank you!”

Eric Hennings-Assistant Cook
“I was born and raised in Humboldt County, so my sense of community ties run deep. I attended Arcata High School and HSU briefly for business administration. In the early 1990s, I obtained work in a sawmill and spent the next 30-years in a variety of manual labor jobs. Then, I encountered a crossroads in my personal life. The experience led to a series of ups & downs, before reinventing myself. My four beautiful, intelligent, young-adult children keep me motivated now! They are the only real driving factor in my life! I try to bring my best to the table, each and everyday."

Douglas Morales-Kitchen Assistant
"I was born and raised in El Salvador, then moved to the USA in southern California at age 12. Living in the San Fernando Valley, I graduated from high school. After that, I worked in the hospitality industry with Marriott and Radisson hotels. I have lived in six different states since moving to America in the mid-1990s. I also have extensive experience in the construction trades, particularly in drywall installation and painting. I came to Humboldt County in 2020 and love the natural beauty of the area! As an avid cyclist, there are mainly scenic journeys to explore, both around metro Eureka and amongst the Redwood forests! I initially volunteered at Free Meal before being hired as Kitchen Assistant in early 2025. Making big kettles of soup for our luncheon guests is my favorite menu entree!"
